Abstract

This article briefly describes the structure and development of local entities in the period between Cadiz Constitution of 1812 and Spanish Constitution of 1978. Moreover, the article examines the reform process to reduce the number of local entities launched in several countries in the second half of the last century. Finally, the article studies the actual problems of the territorial structure of the State from the perspective of the constitutional articulation of local entities. In this regard, the article analyses in particular criteria that should guide the above-mentioned reform.
