Abstract

This article analyses the competences of local entities regarding environmental protection and focus on the urban planning tool because of its special impact on the urban environment. Therefore, the protection of the urban environment is an essential element of a sustainable city and the urban planning is a tool that is useful for achieving this aim not only regarding the design of a new city, but also in dealing with existing cities. In conclusion, it is relevant to point out the role of the cities in the field of the environmental protection and the urban development.
