Cultural Heritage and smart cities: the integral transformation of the city

Josep Ramon Fuentes i Gasó
Abstract

Smart city projects are aimed at providing solutions to the great challenges of contemporary cities: economic effi ciency and environmental sustainability. However, they also represent an opportunity to rethink the way in which their services are provided. This article analyzes the vague concept of a smart city and conceptualizes cultural heritage within the limits of the Spanish legal system. The objective of this study is to point out the importance and the need to integrate culture, represented by heritage, in the fi eld of development of smart cities. By combining these two disciplines, normally unrelated despite their mutual dependence, a true integral and positive evolution of the city can be achieved thanks to social innovation.
